The role of the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is critical in returning an employee to a safety sensitive position following a positive drug or alcohol test, or a refusal to provide a specimen in the DOT testing programs. The SAP role is equally important for non-regulated employers that wish to return an employee to the workplace.
Many employer's recognize the difficulty in finding qualified employees, as well as the financial investment made in training and hiring each employee. In addition, providing an opportunity for a "second chance" to an employee "feels" like the right thing to do.
This second chance does not come without risk to the employer. A positive drug test is legal evidence of illegal drug use. With this knowledge, the potential for liability is greatly increased in the event of an accident involving the returned employee.
The SAP is the individual that helps reduce the increased exposure by providing a face-to-face evaluation, treatment recommendation, monitoring of the employees progress through the required treatment, and ultimately the written return-to-duty recommendation.
Since DOT regulations do not provide for a second opinion concerning the SAP function, the selection of the SAP is critical. Click below to locate a SAP near you and download your SAP qualification form.
